Greeks may not have heard of Halloween until a few years ago, but they seem to have taken to it with relish. Why? For many reasons: (1) They’re always up for a good party; (2) It gives them reason to get more value-for-money from their fancy dress costumes from the Apokries (Carnival) in February; (3) It matches the current miserable mood brought on by the economic crisis so it may be no coincidence that Halloween got popular just as Greeks got poor; (4) They may have started it with death festivals that took place in ancient Greece! (5) There’s even a Christian link as Halloween – or Hallowed Eve – is the date when the Greek Orthodox church prays for the souls of the deceased.
The goal of this list, however, is not to ponder over why Greeks turn to zombies, vampires and a whole array of costumed merrymakers who do little trick or treating but, nonetheless, manage to scare the bejesus out of each other. This year is no exception with Greece abuzz with parties and other events that make use of the “Ochi” (No) public holiday/long weekend to say “Yes” to putting the hell back in Hellas.
