December’s 15 Long Shopping Days of Christmas, the 14th Wage and 13th Pension

Greece’s extended shopping hours have begun, giving those who didn’t blow their paypackets in one go on Black Friday a chance for more shopping. Retailers are hoping to see a spike in last-minute Christmas spending after employees receive their 14th monthly wage (Christmas bonus) by December 21. The Christmas bonus is a full monthly wage offered to all employees and recipients of unemployment benefits. Those who were hired mid-year can calculate their bonus by visiting http://kepea.gr/calc-doro-xristoygennon.php or call (+30) 210 8202100 and 210 8202174 from 09:00-19:30.

In the hopes of giving low-income pensioners cause for celebration, a defiant Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced a one-off 627-million-euro holiday bonus for 1.6 million pensioners around the country. The announcement of the benefit, possibly made in response to the 11-point lead by the main opposition New Democracy party, took the IMF by surprise. The 13th wage wll be given to pensioners who receive less than 850 euros per month.

Retailers are eyeing a share of Christmas bonuses, coupled with the longer shopping hours.
